Nature Events: Expos, Bird Watching, Flower Sales, etc. Around the World

On this page/category at natureinfo.blogspot.com, let us know what type of upcoming nature-related events will be occuring. On your first line, please include the city, state and country where the event will be taking place, and add a link to that site if you can, so we can learn more. For example, here's my first: Grand Marais Boreal Birding Festival, Minnesota, Grand Marais, in June. http://grandmarais.com/birding/ , and their Fall Migration Festival in October.

If you love bird watching, you have to see Vonnie's site Birding in South Florida. She has a picture of a different kind of bird on each of her blogs, and besides identifying them, she meticulously describes their markings. Vonnie also has several great links for birdwatchers, but what intrigues me the most is her personable style of writing. Makes me wish I was on her porch with her, silently sipping coffee while watching our feathered friends, and listening to their unique symphony.

Eagles, hawks, harriers and vultures; you name it, they all pass over the Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve, along the bluffs of Duluth, Minnesota, overlooking Lake Superior. The 2005 Hawk Ridge Birdathon will take place on Sat., May 21-21 (from midnight to midnight), during the “St. Louis County Big Day.” You can join a team attempting to find as many species as possible, or just watch the birds and join in the festivities. For more info. about the event, contact Dave Grosshuesch, e-mail: sdgrossh@d.umn.edu, or to learn more about the organization itself, go to Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory.

WATCH THE 2005 FALL MIGRATION OF BIRDS! One of the greatest locations is from the bluffs of the Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve in Duluth, MN, overlooking Lake Superior, where the warbler migration has been in full swing. As of Aug. 15, nineteen species of warblers had been banded at the station, including the Connecticut Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler, Canada Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, and Northern Waterthrush. All three flycatcher regulars, Least, Traill’s, and Yellow-bellied, have been making regular appearances, plus an Eastern Phoebe.

Dave Grosshuesch even caught and banded a Carolina Wren! There are only a handful of St. Louis County records for this species, and this was a first for Hawk Ridge. Also, his total, as of Aug. 15, was 1100 birds over 13 days of banding, about twice the normal number--for reasons which are unknown.

The official first day of the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory’s raptor count and raptor banding began Aug. 15 and will run through Nov. 30. Raptors seen thus far included Sharp-shinned Hawks, Osprey, Northern Harriers, Broad-winged Hawks, and American Kestrels, but for then the migration was typically slow.

From the Aug. 15, 2005 Hawk Ridge News newsletter: Register NOW for HAWK WEEKEND, September 23-25. For the Friday evening program, Dr. Mark Fuller will present, “Your Birds are My Birds are Our Birds”. Dr. Fuller is a wildlife research biologist for the United States Geological Survey and the director of the Raptor Research Center at Boise State University. On Saturday, Al Batt will present, “Bird Stories” Wings of joy and feathered miracles. Snippets from a life gone to the birds. Al Batt of rural Hartland, Minnesota is a writer, speaker, storyteller, and humorist. Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory’s 2nd Annual Meeting will take place preceding the Saturday evening program, and we’re raking in some wonderful items for our silent auction fundraiser. There will also be a ton of fun at the main overlook, as well as a new birding field trip. For information on registration, trip planning, or to learn more about Hawk Ridge, visit their homepage Hawk Ridge. (8/20/05—Darlene)
